Prof. Steven DenBaars will be a Plenary Speaker at the 2025 Holonyak Workshop at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Body

Prof. DenBaars is Distinguished Professor of Materials and Electrical & Computer Engineering, the Mitsubishi Chemical Professor in Solid State Lighting & Display, Executive Director of the Solid State Lighting and Energy Electronics Center (SSLEEC), and Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency (IEE) at UC Santa Barbara. At UCSB, he has helped pioneer the development of high-efficiency LED lighting, LED and laser displays, and energy-efficient power electronics.

His research focuses on wide-bandgap semiconductors (GaN-based) and their applications to micro-LEDs, UV LEDs, VCSELs, laser diodes, 5G electronics, RF, and high-power electronic devices. Beyond academia, Prof. DenBaars has co-founded four companies in compound semiconductors — Nitres, Soraa, SLD Laser, and Akoustis — translating research into transformative technologies.

His many honors include election to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, fellowship in the IEEE and the National Academy of Inventors National Academy of Inventors, and major awards such as the ISCS Quantum Device Award (2021) and the IEEE Photonics Society Aron Kressel Award (2010). With more than 1,200 peer-reviewed publications (H-index 151) and 150 U.S. patents, his impact on science, technology, and industry has been profound.

We are delighted to welcome Prof. DenBaars to Champaign this September for what promises to be a highlight plenary session.
